Skincare Dos and Don'ts

Learning how to take good care of your skin may take some trial and error. With so many products, it can be difficult to find a combination that works for your unique complexion! If you've been trying to establish an effective routine, start with these basic skin care dos and don'ts.

Do Stay Hydrated

Most of our bodies are made up of water, so it makes sense that drinking enough H2O each day helps support the health of our largest organ. Try to consume at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day to help flush out the toxins that clog pores and leave skin looking dull and feeling rough. Trust in the magic of water and hydration!

Don't Touch Blemishes

In fact, it's a good idea to avoid touching your skin in general. Bacteria from fingers can cause breakouts, while picking at blemishes can lead to infection and scarring. Treat your skin as gently as possible, especially when it's less than clear, affected by acne or otherwise irritated. Dab on a bit of organic acne oil when you have a new friend on your face.

Do Cleanse Twice a Day

Washing your face in the morning and at night is one of the most basic skin care tips. So simple, but so easy to forget. The morning cleanse removes debris and oil that accumulate while you sleep, while the evening cleanse removes makeup and environmental toxins from your day. Look for a face wash with natural ingredients to avoid irritation, especially if you have sensitive skin!

Don't Forget to Moisturize

Even if your skin tends to the oily side, you still need moisturizer to keep your complexion in balance! When skin becomes too dry, oil overproduction can cause clogged pores and unwanted breakouts. We love Vitamin D, but look for an oil-free formula with SPF to shield your skin from the aging effects of the sun's rays.

Do Exfoliate Gently

Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells and debris so your complexion can regenerate with new cells. Choose a gentle product rather than a harsh chemical formula, or use a specialized brush designed for manual exfoliation. For most, exfoliating once or twice a week prevents breakouts without leading to inflammation! Frequent exfoliation can also dry out the skin, leading to a rough texture and excessive oil production.

Don't Skip Sunscreen

When it comes to taking care of your skin, sunscreen should be at the top of your list. As mentioned earlier, you can choose a moisturizer with SPF, but layer with added protection on days when you plan to spend time in the sun. Wear a wide-brimmed hat to shield your complexion from UVA and UVB rays, as exposure increases the risk for skin cancer as well as fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots and other signs of aging.

Do Pay Attention to Nutrition

Consuming the vitamins and minerals we need to stay healthy also optimizes the health of our skin. For a glowing, youthful complexion, be sure to eat foods rich in antioxidants, beta carotene and vitamins A, C and E.

When you check off these dos and avoid the skin care donts, you'll likely notice a positive change in the appearance, texture and health of your skin. Consistent use of gentle products that work for your complexion will revolutionize your skin care routine! Don’t forget: have fun with your skin care routine and experiment with what works best for you and your body.
